The customer looks at the shine of the exterior on delivery, and the plant that fills it looks at the interior with a torch. On the outside, the finish is aesthetic and has to be continuous over several metres of shell, with no bands or changes in reflection. A matt band over the longitudinal seam can be seen from the loading bay; a skipped grit leaves scratches that felt will not remove; and paste residue in a corner of the interior ends up in the product. Polishing the tank does not invent a finish: it has to reproduce that of the plate around the weld so the weld can no longer be seen.

Before ordering consumables, it pays to know which plate the tank was built with and what the manufacturer has committed to with its customer. On 2B it is enough to dull the welded area until it no longer stands out; on a satin finish you have to reproduce the direction and depth of the scratch pattern; and a bright exterior calls for the full sequence up to paste.

2. The circumferential seam, the base of the baffles and the junction with the head are where product collects if the finish has deep scratches or pores. Many customers specify their own value in the order.

If there is an Ra value, it is measured with a roughness tester at several points inside, including on the weld.
